American Subcontractors Association Subcontractor Receives
Certified Professional Constructor Designation
Pem J. Eberlein of A. P. Eberlein received the professional designation of Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) this month. He is one of over 1,300 practitioners throughout the United States and one of three associated with the American Subcontractors Association of Colorado (ASAC).
The certification is a program developed by national construction trade and professional associations under the auspices of the American Institute of Constructors. Other ASAC members who carry the certification are ASAC Partner Mike Golden, CPC of MW Golden Constructors and Andy Cooper, Associate Constructor (AC) of Dan Berich, Inc.
Similar to the Professional Engineer registration process, Constructor Certification is a rigorous two-step qualification process based on experience, education & written examination. ASAC is a test chapter for the study manual that accompanies the written examination and serves as an assistant to Colorado State University in test proctor services. ASAC Safety and Education promotes certification and offers study group and assistance to those wishing to pursue certification. ASAC endorses the certification process alongwith the Associated Builders and Contractors and Associated General Contractors.
Pem founded A. P. Eberlein in 1978 in Tucson, Arizona and relocated his masonry company to Colorado in 1982 to Longmont, Colorado. Pem attended Washington State University and is a Certified Masonry Contractor through the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI). He serves on the board of directors of the Construction Industry Training Council as a representative of ASAC and in the promotion of appreniceship training. Pem is an ASAC Board Member and 2001-2002 President-elect and serves as ASAC Safety and Education Committee Chairman.
A. P. Eberlein is known for their unsurpassed masonry work with a reputation for quality stonework. They are pre-qualified with Colorado University and Denver University. Projects include the Bensen Earth Science Building at CU Boulder and the Hastine Residence in Jackson, Wyoming.
Asked about the new designation, Eberlein states that "with the increased complexity of the construction process the management function has assumed a more critical role in the construction project. This has necessitated the requirement for significant improvement in the qualifications of the industry's personnel, creating the function of a professional constructor separate to the professions of architecture and engineering. The Certified Professional Constructor program provides recognition of this new role together with a standard of qualification by which third parties can assess the individual manager. In turn this provides a meaningful professional achievement goal for young managers entering the industry, and should serve to attract the talent that construction requires."
ASAC is the advocate for construction specialty contractors and suppliers and partners in Colorado. Subcontractor members work in masonry, drywall, plumbing, steel, electrical, mechanical - nearly every specialty trade in the construction industry. Members are also suppliers to the construction industry - almost every construction need is offered through other members. Partners are award winning general contracting firms that are of various size and specialty and work together with subcontractors to bring unsurpassed success in the building project.
